Theme: Not Mine, But Thy Will Be Done!

Readings: Florence from GA

The Bible

Psalm 143:8, 10

8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

Psalm 9:1

1 I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.

1 Samuel 23:1-5

1 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
2 Therefore David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
3 And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
4 Then David enquired of the Lord yet again. And the Lord answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
5 So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

Acts 13: 21-23

21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

Matthew 6:9-10

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

John 5:19

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

John 5:30

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

John 8:28 (to 1st , ) 29

28 Then said Jesus unto them,
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

James 4:13, 14 (to …the morrow), 15

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

Matthew 26:36-39

36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Psalm 40: 4, 8

4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

Psalm 27: 4, 11

4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.
11 Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

17:2-3

Enable us to know,— as in heaven, so on earth,— God is omnipotent, supreme.

168: 18-21

Are we to believe an authority which denies God’s spiritual command relating to perfection, — an authority which Jesus proved to be false? He did the will of the Father.

Miscellaneous Writings

113:14-20

He who refuses to be influenced by any but the divine Mind, commits his way to God, and rises superior to suggestions from an evil source. Christian Science shows that there is a way of escape from the latter-day ultimatum of evil, through scientific truth; so that all are without excuse.

347: 25-27

God is responsible for the mission of those whom He has anointed. Those who know no will but His take His hand, and from the night He leads to light.

208:11-16, 19-22

Mortals have only to submit to the law of God, come into sympathy with it, and to let His will be done. This unbroken motion of the law of divine Love gives, to the weary and heavy-laden, rest. But who is willing to do His will or to let it be done? Mortals obey their own wills, and so disobey the divine order.

Those “whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth.” His rod brings to view His love, and interprets to mortals the gospel of healing. David said, “Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept Thy word.”

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

11:27-31

Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth.

445:19-26

Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick. Self-seeking, envy, passion, pride, hatred, and revenge are cast out by the divine Mind which heals disease. The human will which maketh and worketh a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health, and is the cause of disease rather than its cure.

597:20-21, 24-26

Will. The motive-power of error; mortal belief; animal power. The might and wisdom of God. Will, as a quality of so-called mortal mind, is a wrong-doer; hence it should not be confounded with the term as applied to Mind or to one of God’s qualities.

490:3-11

Will-power is but a product of belief, and this belief commits depredations on harmony. Human will is an animal propensity, not a faculty of Soul. Hence it cannot govern man aright. Christian Science reveals Truth and Love as the motive-powers of man. Will — blind, stubborn, and headlong — cooperates with appetite and passion. From this cooperation arises its evil. From this also comes its powerlessness, since all power belongs to God, good.

451:19-23

Every Christian Scientist, every conscientious teacher of the Science of Mind-healing, knows that human will is not Christian Science, and he must recognize this in order to defend himself from the influence of human will.

33:18-23

When the human element in him struggled with the divine, our great Teacher said: “Not my will, but Thine, be done!”— that is, Let not the flesh, but the Spirit, be represented in me. This is the new understanding of spiritual Love. It gives all for Christ, or Truth.

Miscellaneous Writings

213:27-30

Loyal Christian Scientists, be of good cheer: the night is far spent, the day dawns; God’s universal kingdom will appear, Love will reign in every heart, and His will be done on earth as in heaven.

212:18-22(to …. in the divine)

The currents of human nature rush in against the right course; health, happiness, and life flow not into one of their channels. The law of Love saith, “Not my will, but Thine, be done,” and Christian Science proves that human will is lost in the divine; …

Retrospection and Introspection

26:8-11

Our great Way-shower, steadfast to the end in his obedience to God’s laws, demonstrated for all time and peoples the supremacy of good over evil, and the superiority of Spirit over matter.

Miscellaneous Writings

384: 6-9

Come Thou! and now, anew,
     To thought and deed
     Give sober speed,
Thy will to know, and do.

398:1-4

I will listen for Thy voice,
     Lest my footsteps stray;
I will follow and rejoice
     All the rugged way.
